Viper snares Beth Lewis' 'rich and atmospheric' murder mystery The Rush

Viper has acquired The Rush plus another standalone novel by Beth Lewis.

Miranda Jewess, publishing director at Profile Books’ crime imprint, acquired world rights to the two books via David Headley. Viper will publish in hardback, e-book and audio in June 2025.

The Rush is described as "a sweeping historical novel" that takes place in Canada, in 1898. "The Gold Rush is on in the frozen wilderness of the Yukon," the synopsis says. "Fortunes are made as quickly as they’re lost, and Dawson City has become a lawless settlement."

The synopsis adds: "In its midst, three women are trying to find their place on the edge of civilisation. When a woman is found murdered, Kate, Martha and Ellen find their lives, fates and fortunes intertwined. But to unmask her killer, they must navigate a desperate land run by dangerous men who will do anything for a glimpse of gold."

Jewess commented: “Beth has woven a story so rich and atmospheric that you feel as if you’re standing ankle-deep in the mud of Dawson City, being buffeted by the hopeful but desperate gold miners of 1898. By telling this story through the lives of three women, all of whom are based on real women who went to the Klondike, she reveals an aspect of history that is often overshadowed, but which is utterly fascinating. This is a stunning historical novel with a murder mystery at its heart, and we’re delighted that Beth is joining the Viper list.”

Lewis added: “I’ve watched Viper go from strength to strength over the last few years, publishing some of the finest crime and thrillers on the market. I’m utterly thrilled to be joining the gang. Miranda is a phenomenal editor and her and her team have shown such passion for the The Rush, I couldn’t be more excited to work together.”
